چکیده

Background Remodeling of the vessel wall is associated with wall shear stress (WSS) magnitude (Malek, 1999). It has been suggested that local low or high WSS may respectively promote or prevent atherosclerotic lesions in the carotid vessel wall. The current procedure for WSS quantification is computational fluid dynamics (CFD), which is time-consuming and not always patient-specific. In the past years, methods that derive WSS directly from MRI 4D flow measurements have been developed. These allow patient-specific WSS quantifications while using less computational power and time. We tested to what extent MRI-based WSS maps match the patient-specific CFD-base maps. To accomplish this, a pipeline for simultaneous MRIand CFD-based WSS calculations was developed and applied to the carotid arteries of 6 healthy volunteers.

Evaluation of the Effect of Simplified and Patient-specific Arterial Geometry on Hemodynamic Flow in Stenosed Carotid Bifurcation Arteries

Numerous CFD studies have been performed on the motivation to elucidate the role of hemodynamic forces in the development of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries and the carotid bifurcation artery. In order to improve CFD predictions, and to consider CFD as a clinical diagnostic or treatment planning tool, there is a need to ensure its accuracy and reliability through a systematic approach ...

Reconstruction of carotid bifurcation hemodynamics and wall thickness using computational fluid dynamics and MRI.

A thorough understanding of the relationship between local hemodynamics and plaque progression has been hindered by an inability to prospectively monitor these factors in vivo in humans. In this study a novel approach for noninvasively reconstructing artery wall thickness and local hemodynamics at the human carotid bifurcation is presented. Three-dimensional (3D) models of the lumen and wall bo...

3D quantification of wall shear stress using finite-element interpolations from 4D flow MR data in the Thoracic Aorta

Background Actual methods to quantify wall shear stress (WSS) are performed on reformatted 2D planes from 4D flow data sets. This approach has the inherit limitation that only a few planes are analyzed on specific locations of the aorta, even though the full 3D velocity field is usually available. Another problem with this approach is that the process of locating 2D planes manually is dependent...

On the Importance of Outflow Boundary Conditions for Hemodynamic Modelling of the Carotid Artery

Carotid arteries are a common site of atherosclerotic lesion development. Computational fluid dynamics models suggest that flow disturbances associated with stenosis can contribute to the initiation and progression of vascular wall pathologies. The main goal of this study is to present an investigation on the overall influence of assumptions regarding the outflow boundary conditions in hemodyna...

New Methods for Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling of Carotid Artery from Magnetic Resonance Angiography

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of the carotid artery are constructed from contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) using a deformable model and a surface-merging algorithm. Physiologic flow conditions are obtained from cine phase-contrast MRA at two slice locations below and above the carotid bifurcation. The methodology was tested on image data from a rigid flow-throug...
